ToyotaToyota is Japan’s largest automotive corporation, also providing financial services and several additional business lines. It is the largest publicly traded automobile company in the world and the largest publicly traded company in Japan. The company is headquartered in Toyota, Aichi Prefecture (Japan).

Toyota Motor Corporation produces a wide range of automotive engines. Since 1987, the company has followed the following naming system for its engines:

  • the first digits indicate the generation of the engine block;
  • the next one or two letters indicate the engine family;
  • suffixes (through dashes) define engine features;
  • further, after the letters, the seven-digit serial number of the engine in this generation of the family is indicated.

Engine Toyota 2MZ-FE

The 2.5-liter Toyota 2MZ-FE engine was produced in Japan from 1995 to 2002 and was installed mainly on models for the Asian market. This engine is famous for its fastidiousness to fuel quality. This engine is most often found on right-hand drive cars.

Engine Toyota 1MZ-FE

The 3.0-liter Toyota 1MZ-FE engine was produced from 1993 to 2008 at the company’s plants in Japan and the USA and was installed on numerous models of the Japanese concern for all markets. Usually, two versions of the power unit are distinguished: with and without a VVT-i phase regulator at the intake.

Engine Toyota 3MZ-FE

The 3.3-liter Toyota 3MZ-FE engine was produced from 2002 to 2015 at factories in Japan and the USA and was installed on many models of the concern. The motor was equipped with a VVT-i phase regulator on the intake shaft, a variable length manifold and an ETCS-i electronic throttle.

Engine Toyota 3NR-FE

The 1.2-liter Toyota 3NR-FE engine has been assembled since 2011 in Japan for B-class models. The unit comes in two versions: with and without the Dual VVT-i variable valve timing system. A simplified modification of the motor without a phase regulator is offered only in the Indian market.

Engine Toyota 8NR-FTS

The 1.2-liter Toyota 8NR-FTS engine has been produced since 2015 and only at the concern’s Japanese plant. This engine operates on the Atkinson cycle, is equipped with direct fuel injection, turbocharging with an intercooler and variable valve timing systems VVT-i + VVT-iW.

Engine Toyota 1NR-FE

The 1.3-liter Toyota 1NR-FE engine has been assembled since 2008 and only in Japanese factories. The motor is available in two versions: for developing countries EURO 3 and for other EURO 4/5. There is also a modification for bioethanol 1NR-FBE, and two more Chinese 4NR-FE and 6NR-FE.

Engine Toyota 1NR-VE

The 1.3-liter Toyota 1NR-VE engine has been produced since 2015 in Japan and put it only on compact models that are offered in the automotive markets of Southeast Asia. The engine in all modifications is equipped with a variable valve timing system Dual VVT-i.

Engine Toyota 1NR-FKE

The 1.3-liter Toyota 1NR-FKE engine has been assembled in Japan since 2014, mainly for the local car market. This engine operates on an economical Atkinson cycle, has a high compression ratio and is equipped with a variable valve timing system VVT-iE.

Engine Toyota 2NR-FE

The 1.5-liter Toyota 2NR-FE engine has been assembled since 2010 at the company’s Japanese plant. The motor is available in two versions: with the Dual VVT-i phase control system, as well as without it. There is a separate modification on bioethanol 2NR-FBE and two Chinese 5NR-FE and 7NR-FE.

Engine Toyota 2NR-VE

The 1.5-liter Toyota 2NR-VE engine has been assembled since 2015 in Japan for Asian models. This motor is available in two versions: for EURO 3 and for EURO 4/5 with different compression ratios. All modifications of this power unit are equipped with Dual VVT-i phase control systems.

Engine Toyota 2NR-FKE

The 1.5-liter Toyota 2NR-FKE engine has been assembled since 2015 at the company’s Japanese plant and only for the local car market. This engine operates on an economical Atkinson cycle with a compression ratio of 13.5: 1, and also has a proprietary VVT-iE variable valve timing system.

Engine Toyota 2NZ-FE

2NZ engine – 4-stroke 4-cylinder gasoline with electronic fuel injection and ignition control system, in-line cylinders and pistons rotating one common crankshaft, with two overhead camshafts (usually with a variable valve timing system VVT-i). The engine has a closed-type forced circulation liquid cooling system. Combined lubrication system: pressure and spray.

Engine Toyota 1NZ-FE

The 1.5-liter Toyota 1NZ-FE engine has been produced since 1999 at the company’s Japanese plant. The unit is placed on compact models and is equipped with a VVT-i phase regulator only at the intake. During the release, the motor received a number of updates and there are versions of 2003, 2005 and 2010.

Engine Toyota 1NZ-FXE

The 1.5-liter Toyota 1NZ-FXE engine has been produced since 1997 only in Japan. At first, it was installed only on the Prius, but then it spread to other hybrid models of the concern. The motor is equipped with a VVT-i phase regulator on the intake shaft and an ETCS-i electronic throttle.

Engine Toyota 22R

The 2.4-liter Toyota 22R carbureted engine was produced in Japan from 1981 to 1997 and was installed on such popular models of the company as 4Runner, Hilux and Land Cruiser J70. This motor was seriously updated in 1990 and its power increased by more than 10 hp.

The 2.2-liter Toyota 5S-FE engine was assembled at a factory in Japan and the USA from 1989 to 2001 and was installed both in Celica and MR2 sports coupes and in a regular Camry sedan. In the American market, a gas version of the power unit was offered under the symbol 5S-FNE.

Engine Toyota 1SZ-FE

The 1.0-liter Toyota 1SZ-FE engine was produced from 1999 to 2005 in Japan for the Yaris family of models only. The motor was equipped with a phase control system of the VVT-i type only at the inlet, and the gas distribution mechanism of the unit was driven using a Morse chain.

The 1.3-liter Toyota 2SZ-FE engine was produced from 1999 to 2016 in China and Indonesia for the concern’s compact models. The motor was equipped with a VVT-i phase regulator only at the inlet, and the gas distribution mechanism of the unit was driven using a Morse chain.

Engine Toyota 2TR-FE

The 2.7-liter Toyota 2TR-FE engine has been assembled since 2004 at factories in Japan and Indonesia for large pickups and SUVs. This motor was originally equipped with a VVT-i phase regulator at the intake, and in 2015 a newer Dual VVT-i system appeared already on two shafts.

Engine Toyota 2TZ-FE

The 2.4-liter Toyota 2TZ-FE engine was produced from 1990 to 1999 at the Japanese enterprise of the concern and was installed only on the rear and all-wheel drive Previa and Estima minivans. This horizontal motor is tilted 75 degrees to fit under the body floor.

Engine Toyota 2TZ-FZE

The 2.4-liter Toyota 2TZ-FZE engine was produced from 1994 to 1999 in Japan and was installed on rear and all-wheel drive minivans. This motor is specially designed to be located only under the floor of the body, has a 75-degree inclination and a mechanical supercharger.

The 4.6-liter Toyota 1UR-FE engine was introduced in 2006 as a powertrain for SUVs and full-size pickups, as well as executive models for emerging markets. Its main difference from 1UR-FSE is in the power system: distributed injection instead of direct.

Engine Toyota 1UR-FSE

The 4.6-liter Toyota 1UR-FSE engine was first introduced in 2006 as a power unit for powerful executive class models. This motor is equipped with a proprietary D4-S direct fuel injection system and a VVT-iE electric phase shifter at the intake.

Engine Toyota 2UR-GSE

The 5.0-liter Toyota 2UR-GSE engine was introduced in 2007 as a unit for sports Lexus models. This motor is interesting with special Yamaha cylinder heads, titanium valves and a combined fuel injection system: a combination of direct D4-S and distributed MPI.

The 5.7-liter Toyota 3UR-FE engine was first introduced in 2007 as a powertrain for the company’s largest SUVs and pickups. In a number of markets, there is an ethanol version of this engine with the 3UR-FBE index.

Engine Toyota 1UZ-FE

The 4.0-liter V8 Toyota 1UZ-FE engine was assembled at the Tahara plant from 1989 to 2004 and installed on the most powerful rear-wheel drive models of the Japanese concern of that time. There are two generations of the motor: 1989 without a phase regulator and 1997 with the VVT-i system.

Engine Toyota 3UZ-FE

The 4.3-liter V8 Toyota 3UZ-FE engine was assembled at a plant in Japan from 2000 to 2013 and installed in rear-wheel drive passenger cars, including those manufactured under the Lexus brand. This power unit was equipped with VVT-i phase shifters on the intake shafts and the ACIS system.

Engine Toyota 2UZ-FE

The 4.7-liter Toyota 2UZ-FE engine was produced from 1998 to 2012 only at the American plant in Alabama and was installed on the most powerful SUVs and pickup trucks of the concern. At different times, there were two versions of this engine, with and without the VVT-i variable valve timing system.

Engine Toyota V35A-FTS

The 3.5-liter Toyota V35A-FTS engine was shown in 2017 along with the new Lexus LS500. This power unit is equipped with twin turbocharging and develops over 400 hp and 600 Nm. Soon these motors will replace all V-shaped 8-cylinder engines under the hood of many models of the concern.

The 2.0-liter Toyota 1VZ-FE engine was produced from 1988 to 1992 at the concern’s American plant and was installed only on the top-end Prominent version of the Camry sedan of two generations. Due to problems with overheating, this power unit lasted less than five years on the assembly line.

Engine Toyota 2VZ-FE

The 2.5-liter Toyota 2VZ-FE engine was assembled from 1988 to 1991 at the concern’s American plant and was installed only on the popular Camry Prominent sedans and its analogue Lexus ES 250. Constant problems with overheating forced the manufacturer to soon withdraw it from production.

The 2.5-liter Toyota 4VZ-FE engine was assembled from 1991 to 1996 at the concern’s American plant and was installed only on the popular Camry sedan, as well as its Japanese counterpart Windom. In fact, the power unit was an upgraded version of its predecessor 2VZ-FE.

Engine Toyota 1Y

Engine Toyota 3Y-EU

The 2.0-liter Toyota 3Y-EU gasoline engine was produced by the concern from 1983 to 1996 and was installed on such popular minibuses as LiteAce, Master Ace or Town Ace. This unit can also be found under the hood of the Asian version of the Hilux 4Runner 61G SUV.

Engine Toyota 4Y

The 2.2-liter Toyota 4Y carbureted engine was produced by the company from 1985 to 1997 and was installed on the popular Town Ace and HiAce minibuses, Hilux pickups and Crown S130 sedans. Especially for commercial vehicles, a modification derated up to 70 hp was produced.

Engine Toyota 4Y-E

The 2.2-liter Toyota 4Y-E injection engine was produced by the concern from 1985 to 1996 and was installed on HiAce or Town Ace minibuses, Hilux pickups and 4Runner SUVs. After the end of production, the motor moved to China, where it is assembled as GW 491QE or Q491ME.

Engine Toyota 1ZR-FE

The 1.6-liter Toyota 1ZR-FE engine has been produced at several factories at once since 2006 and is primarily known for the most popular models of the Japanese concern Corolla and Auris. There is a version of this unit for the Chinese market under its own index 4ZR-FE.

Engine Toyota 1ZR-FAE

The 1.6-liter Toyota 1ZR-FAE engine has been produced since 2009 at enterprises in China and the USA for front-wheel drive Auris models. The motor is simultaneously equipped with two valvematic and Dual VVT-i gas distribution systems. The ethanol version has a separate index 1ZR-FBE.

Engine Toyota 2ZR-FE

The 1.8-liter Toyota 2ZR-FE engine has been produced since 2006 in factories in China and the United States for front-wheel drive models such as Corolla or Auris, as well as Lotus sports cars. This engine in all versions is equipped with a variable valve timing system Dual VVT-i.

Engine Toyota 2ZR-FAE

The 1.8-liter Toyota 2ZR-FAE engine has been produced since 2007 at several of the company’s enterprises in China and the USA for front-wheel drive models such as Auris. This motor is equipped with Valvematic and Dual VVTi gas distribution systems. The ethanol version has the index 2ZR-FBE.

Engine Toyota 2ZR-FXE

The 1.8-liter Toyota 2ZR-FXE engine has been assembled at the factories of the Japanese concern since 2009 and is installed on the hybrid versions of the Auris, Corolla and Lexus CT, but is best known for the Prius. In the Chinese market, it is offered under its own indexes 5ZR-FXE and 8ZR-FXE.

The 2.0-liter Toyota 3ZR-FAE engine has been assembled since 2008 at enterprises in Japan and the United States and put on front-wheel drive models such as Avensis and all-wheel drive crossovers such as RAV4. The motor is equipped with two variable valve timing systems Valvematic and Dual VVT-i.

Engine Toyota 4ZZ-FE

The 1.4-liter Toyota 4ZZ-FE engine was assembled from 1999 to 2009 at the concern’s Japanese enterprise and installed on the most popular front-wheel drive models from Auris and Corolla. This power unit had a variable valve timing system at the VVT-i inlet.

Engine Toyota 3ZZ-FE
