Porsche engines

PorschePorsche AG is a German automobile manufacturer founded by designer Ferdinand Porsche in 1931 and currently a subsidiary of Porsche Automobil Holding. The headquarters and main plant are located in Stuttgart, Germany.

The company produces luxury sports cars, as well as SUVs. The production of Porsche cooperates to a large extent with Volkswagen.

From the very beginning of its existence, the company has been actively involved in motorsport, and is also active in organizing sports clubs and competitions among various classes of its cars.

The index of each motor consists of five characters separated by a dot:

  • The first part consists of three letters or numbers and indicates the engine family.
  • The second part of the two characters distinguishes the engines within their family.

Engine Porsche MCT.MA

The 3.0-liter Porsche MCT.MA turbo engine was produced by the concern only from 2014 to 2018 and was installed on the pre-styling version of the very popular Macan S crossover. A more powerful modification of this engine with its MDC.NA index was installed on the Macan GTS.

Engine Porsche M46.20

The 3.6-liter V6 Porsche M46.20 engine was produced by a German company from 2009 to 2013 and was installed on the basic modifications of the first generation Panamera 970 before restyling. There was a version of the unit for all-wheel drive models with its own index M46.40.

Engine Porsche MCX.ZA

The company assembled the 3.6-liter V6 petrol engine Porsche MCX.ZA from 2014 to 2017 and installed it only on a restyled version of the second-generation Cayenne GTS crossover. There is a derated version of the unit with the MCU.RA index for modifying the Cayenne S.

Engine Porsche MCT.LA

The 3.6-liter gasoline V6 turbo engine Porsche MCT.LA was produced from 2014 to 2018 and was installed on charged versions of the first generation Macan crossover before restyling. In some sources, this power unit appears under a slightly different index M46.35.

Engine Porsche M48.00

The 4.5-liter Porsche M48.00 gasoline engine was produced by the company from 2002 to 2007 and was installed on the Cayenne crossover in the back of the 955 or the pre-styling version of the first generation. Such an engine is known for frequent cylinder scuffing due to poor Lokasil coating.

Engine Porsche M48.50

The German company assembled the 4.5-liter Porsche M48.50 turbo engine from 2002 to 2007 and put it on the pre-styling version of the first generation Cayenne crossovers in the back of the 955. This engine is famous for the frequent formation of scuffing in the cylinders due to the poor Alusil coating.

Engine Porsche M48.51

The German concern produced the 4.8-liter turbo engine Porsche M48.51 from 2007 to 2010 and installed it on a restyled version of the first generation Cayenne crossover in the back of 957. The unit has two levels of boost: for the Turbo modification at 500 hp and for the Turbo S at 550 hp.

Engine Porsche M96.20

The 2.5-liter boxer Porsche M96.20 engine was produced by the concern from 1996 to 1999 and was installed on the basic modifications of the first generation Boxster convertible in the back of the 986. The engines of the first years had many problems due to the poor quality of the casting of the cylinder block.

Engine Porsche M96.22

The 2.7-liter boxer Porsche M96.22 engine was assembled by the company from 1999 to 2002 and was installed only on restyled versions of the first-generation Boxster convertible in the back of the 986. There was a 3.2-liter modification of this power unit under its M96.21 index.

Engine Porsche M96.26

The 3.2-liter boxer Porsche M96.26 engine was produced by the concern from 2004 to 2006 and was installed on the second-generation Boxster S cabriolets in the back of the 987 of the first years of production. There was a 3.2-liter modification of such a power unit with its index M96.25.

Engine Porsche M97.20

The 2.7-liter boxer Porsche M97.20 engine was produced by the company from 2006 to 2009 and was installed on the basic modifications of the Cayman coupe or Boxster cabriolet in the back of the 987. This power unit is a seriously updated version of the engine under the M96.23 index.

Engine Porsche M97.21

The 3.4-liter boxer Porsche M97.21 engine was produced by the concern from 2005 to 2009 and was installed on advanced modifications of the Cayman S coupe or Boxster S cabriolet in the back of 987. There was a slightly more powerful version of this power unit under its M97.22 index.

Engine Porsche MDC.AB

The 2.9-liter Porsche MDC.AB bi-turbo engine has been assembled by the German concern since 2017 and is installed on the current generation of the Cayenne crossover, which is popular in many markets. A similar turbo unit is installed on charged versions of the Audi RS4 and RS5 under the DECA index.
