Caterpillar Inc. traces its origins to the merger in 1925 of Holt Manufacturing Company and C.L. Best Tractor Company, resulting in the creation of a new legal entity – the California-based Caterpillar Tractor Company. In 1986, the company was reorganized into a Delaware corporation under the current name Caterpillar Inc. Its headquarters are located in Deerfield, Illinois.
