Engine Toyota 3ZR-FE

The 2.0-liter Toyota 3ZR-FE engine has been produced since 2007 at enterprises in Japan and the USA for front-wheel drive models such as Avensis. This engine is equipped with a variable valve timing system Dual VVT-i. A number of markets sell an ethanol version with the 3ZR-FBE index.

The ZR family includes engines: 1ZR‑FE, 1ZR‑FAE, 2ZR‑FE, 2ZR‑FAE, 2ZR‑FXE, 3ZR‑FE, 3ZR‑FAE.

The engine was installed on:

  • Toyota Avensis 3 (T270) since 2009;
  • Toyota Corolla 10 (E150) in 2006 – 2013; Corolla E170 since 2013;
  • Toyota RAV4 4 (XA40) since 2012.

Disadvantages of the 3ZR-FE engine

  1. Oil overrun. Early release models suffer from this problem. It can be eliminated by replacing the standard filled oil with more viscous modifications – W30. Compression is also required for high mileage.
  2. Knocking in the motor. If it makes a noise at mid-speed, you need to change the timing belt tensioner. In other cases, the drive belt may be at fault and should be replaced as well.
  3. Idling problems. If the throttle valve sensor malfunctions and its unclean state, rpm may begin to float and other characteristic malfunctions may appear.
  4. The pump is flowing and making noise. Change it every seventy thousand kilometers.

The Toyota 3ZR engine is characterized by a failure of the thermostat, due to which the engine stops warming up to a normal level. It can also simply override the VVTi valve and the motor will lose power. However, despite the whole number of shortcomings, the unit is quite good. With proper care, it can travel more than a quarter of a million kilometers without showing any problems.
