The index of any engine consists of one or two Latin letters, as well as three numbers:
- The first letter M is assigned to gasoline engines, OM – respectively to diesel ones;
- The next three digits indicate the series number to which the engine belongs.

The 2.7-liter 5-cylinder in-line Mercedes OM612 engine was produced from 1999 to 2007 and installed on such popular concern models as the W203, W210, W163 and Geländewagen. There was an AMG version of this diesel unit with a volume of 3.0 liters and a power of 230 hp.
The 2.7-liter 5-cylinder in-line Mercedes OM647 engine was produced from 2002 to 2005 and was installed on the E-Class model in the W211 body and only on the pre-styling modification.
