The Mercedes Benz OM612 engine is a 5-cylinder diesel engine with 2 overhead camshafts that drive 20 valves through pushrods. Compared to its predecessor OM604, it has 30% more power, 50% more torque and 10% less fuel consumption. An oxidation catalyst is used to clean the outlet gases. As the efficiency of the new generation engines was increased, there was not enough heat to heat the passenger compartment at low temperatures.

Frequent problems
- the problem of 5-cylinder diesels of the series is increased wear of the camshafts;
- the timing chain does not serve for long here, its resource is ~ 200-250 thousand km;
- electrical wiring often burns out injectors and boost pressure sensor;
- nozzles coke quickly if the refractory washers are not replaced during dismantling;
- other failures of this engine are related to Common Rail fuel equipment.
