EA153 or VW R5 engines

The VW EA153 family of 5-cylinder diesel engines was produced from 1990 to 2012 and was installed both on commercial models such as the Transporter, Crafter, and on the Touareg SUV. These diesel engines are divided into two generations: the first with a cast-iron block and the second with aluminum.

Pre-chamber diesels EA153

In 1990, 5-cylinder pre-chamber diesel engines appeared on the Transporter T4 minibus, which in fact were a modification of the Audi EA381 engines for a transverse arrangement. By design, there is a cast-iron cylinder block with an aluminum 10-valve SOHC head and a timing belt drive. They did not have a turbine, that is, the engines were atmospheric.

We know of only two such power units, and both of them were installed on the Transporter T4:

  • AAB (78 hp / 164 Nm), produced in 1990 – 1998;
  • AJA (75 hp / 160 Nm), produced in 1997 – 2003.

Based on these diesel engines, a series of 2.5-liter gasoline units was created. The engines were distinguished by the presence of an electronic system of distributed fuel injection Digifant.

In 1996, the 2nd generation of gasoline units with a Simos type injection system debuted, they also got a camshaft position sensor, and the compression ratio increased from 8.5 to 10.0.

There are 7 modifications of such power units and all of them are installed on T4 minibuses:

  • AAF (Digifant, 110 hp / 190 Nm, 1990 – 1994;
  • ACU (Digifant, 110 hp / 190 Nm, 1993 – 1996;
  • ACU (Digifant, 110 hp / 190 Nm, 1995 – 1996;
  • ACU (Digifant, 110 hp / 190 Nm, 1996 – 2003;
  • AET (Simos, 115 hp / 200 Nm, 1996 – 2003;
  • APL (Simos, 115 hp / 200 Nm, 1999 – 2000;
  • AVT (Simos, 115 hp / 200 Nm, 1999 – 2003.

Diesel engines EA153 with direct injection

Already in 1995, they showed an updated 5-cylinder diesel engine with direct fuel injection. It was quite a typical power unit for its time with a cast-iron cylinder block, an aluminum 10-valve block head with hydraulic compensators, and a timing belt drive. Fuel injection was carried out using a Bosch VP37 high pressure fuel pump.

8 different turbodiesels were installed on the popular Transporter T4 minibuses:

  • AJT (88 hp / 195 Nm), produced in 1998 – 2003;
  • AYY (88 hp / 195 Nm), produced in 1999 – 2003;
  • ACV (102 hp / 250 Nm), produced in 1995 – 2003;
  • AUF (102 hp / 250 Nm), produced in 1996 – 2003;
  • AXL (102 hp / 250 Nm), produced in 1999 – 2003;
  • AYC (102 hp / 250 Nm), produced in 1999 – 2003;
  • AHY (151 hp / 295 Nm), produced in 1998 – 2003;
  • AXG (151 hp / 295 Nm), produced in 1999 – 2003.

Diesel engines EA153 with unit-injectors

The second generation of EA153 engines debuted in 2003 on the Transporter T5 minibus and was distinguished by a completely different aluminum cylinder block, timing gears and the Bosch Pumpe-Duse fuel system characteristic of Volkswagen diesel engines of that time. The block head with two valves per cylinder and hydraulic lifters remained unchanged. There were no atmospheric engines and all units were equipped with a variable geometry turbine.

Under the hood of the first generation Touareg SUV, these engines were located longitudinally:

  • BLK (163 hp / 400 Nm), produced in 2003 – 2009;
  • BPD (163 hp / 400 Nm), produced in 2006 – 2009;
  • BAC (174 hp / 400 Nm), produced in 2003 – 2009;
  • BPE (174 hp / 400 Nm), produced in 2006 – 2009.

But in the fifth generation of the Transporter minibus, these motors were installed transversely:

  • AXD (130 hp / 340 Nm), produced in 2003 – 2009;
  • BNZ (130 hp / 340 Nm), produced in 2006 – 2009;
  • AXE (174 hp / 400 Nm), produced in 2003 – 2009;
  • BPC (174 hp / 400 Nm), produced in 2006 – 2009.

Diesel engines EA153 V10 TDI

For the Phaeton and Touareg GP models, a 5.0-liter V-shaped 10-cylinder engine was created, which consisted of two diesel power units already described above in one. Here, too, an aluminum block, gear timing and cylinder head with two valves per cylinder. And pressurization was carried out with the help of two variable geometry turbochargers at once.

Only one engine modification was installed on the Phaeton executive class sedan:

  • AJS (313 hp / 750 Nm), produced in 2002 – 2006.

And under the hood of the Touareg SUV, there are 5 different versions of this diesel engine at once:

  • AYH (313 hp / 750 Nm), produced in 2002 – 2009;
  • BKW (313 hp / 750 Nm), produced in 2003 – 2004;
  • BLE (313 hp / 750 Nm), produced in 2004 – 2009;
  • BWF (313 hp / 750 Nm), produced in 2006 – 2009;
  • CBWA (351 hp / 850 Nm), produced in 2006 – 2009.
