The 2AR-FE/FSE/FXE engines received a number of significant differences from the 2AZ series, which they replaced. Among them are lightweight pistons and pins, a cylinder block made of aluminum with thin cast iron liners. In addition, the gas distribution mechanism is Dual-VVTi and the volume increased to 2.5 liters.

The exceptions are the characteristic knocks from the VVTi clutch in a cold state, the pump leaks, which are solved by replacing these components.
