EA111 or VW R4 engines

The VW EA111 line of 4-cylinder engines appeared in 1985 after the EA801 update. This family of power units has been so seriously upgraded several times that it is usually divided into five different series: transitional motors, as well as MPi, HTP, FSI and TSI.

Transition from EA801 series to EA111

In the 80s of the last century, the EA801 series engines began to be equipped with hydraulic lifters, which led to their rebranding and the emergence of a new family with its own name EA111. The cylinder spacing remained at 81 mm and the engine displacement was limited to 1.6 liters. But at first it was about more modest engines, the lineup consisted of engines from 1043 to 1272 cm³.

In many markets, only 1.3-liter engines, which were put on Golf and Polo, gained popularity:

  • MH (54 hp / 95 Nm);
  • NZ (55 hp / 96 Nm).

These units have a modern design with a cast-iron 4-cylinder block and an aluminum 8-valve cylinder head with hydraulic lifters, which is located on top. The drive of the only camshaft here is carried out by a belt, and the oil pump by a chain.

Classic MPI motors EA111 series

Soon, the line of power units expanded significantly, and their volume increased to 1.6 liters. Also, 16-valve versions with a pair of camshafts are very widespread. All engines were equipped with multiport fuel injection, which is why they were often called MPi.

We have summarized the characteristics of the most common engines.

1.0 liters 8v (999 cc, 67.1 × 70.6 mm):

  • AER (50 hp / 86 Nm);
  • AUC (50 hp / 86 Nm).

1.4 liters 8v (1390 cc, 76.5 × 75.6 mm):

  • AEX (60 hp / 116 Nm).

1.4 liters 16v (1390 cc, 76.5 × 75.6 mm):

  • AKQ (75 hp / 126 Nm);
  • AXP (75 hp / 126 Nm);
  • BBY (75 hp / 126 Nm);
  • BCA (75 hp / 126 Nm);
  • BUD (80 hp / 132 Nm);
  • CGGA (80 hp / 132 Nm);
  • CGGB (86 hp / 132 Nm).

1.6 liters 8v (1598 cc, 76.5 × 86.9 mm):

  • ABU (75 hp / 126 Nm);
  • AEE (75 hp / 135 Nm).

1.6 liters 16v (1598 cc, 76.5 × 86.9 mm):

  • AUS (105 hp / 148 Nm);
  • AZD (105 hp / 148 Nm);
  • BCB (105 hp / 148 Nm);
  • BTS (105 hp / 153 Nm).

The apogee of the EA111 series of atmospheric injection engines was the well-known engines:

  • CFNA (105 hp / 153 Nm);
  • CFNB (85 hp / 145 Nm).

HTP 3-cylinder engine family

Separately, it is worth talking about a series of aluminum HTP units with only three cylinders. Engineers in 2002 created the perfect motor for a mini car, but it turned out to be unreliable. The owners were especially worried about the timing chain with a resource of even less than 100,000 km.

  • BMD (54 hp / 106 Nm);
  • BME (64 hp / 112 Nm);
  • CGPA (70 hp / 112 Nm).

FSI EA111 series power units

In 2000, the company’s engineers equipped the 1.4 and 1.6 liter engines with direct fuel injection. The first engines were based on the old cylinder block with a timing belt, but in 2003 a new aluminum block appeared, in which the belt gave way to the chain.

  • ARR (105 hp / 130 Nm);
  • BKG (90 hp / 130 Nm);
  • BAD (110 hp / 155 Nm);
  • BAG (115 hp / 155 Nm);
  • BLF (116 hp / 155 Nm).

TSI EA111 series power units

In 2005, probably the most massive Volkswagen engines were presented. The new 1.2 TSI turbo engines, as well as 1.4 TSI, incorporated the most modern technologies, but they became known not because of their innovation, but because of their very low reliability.

  • CBZA (86 hp / 160 Nm);
  • CBZB (105 hp / 175 Nm);
  • BMY (140 hp / 220 Nm);
  • BWK (150 hp / 240 Nm);
  • CAVA (150 hp / 240 Nm);
  • CAVD (160 hp / 240 Nm);
  • CAXA (122 hp / 200 Nm);
  • CDGA (150 hp / 220 Nm);
  • CTHA (150 hp / 240 Nm).

Despite all the improvements, these motors never reached maturity and were replaced by the EA211 series. The reliable naturally aspirated engines of the EA111 range are still being assembled in developing countries.
