The 4.2-liter Mitsubishi 4D33 diesel was used from the early 1990s on heavier versions of the Fuso Canter and remained in production until about 2004.
It is a naturally aspirated OHV engine with a gear-driven camshaft, direct injection and an in-line pump. With a bore of 108 mm and a stroke of 115 mm it displaces 4214 cc and produces about 125 hp.
The 4D3 series also includes: 4D30, 4D31, 4D32, 4D34, 4D35 and 4D36.

- Mitsubishi Fuso Canter 5 in 1991 – 1993;
- Mitsubishi Fuso Canter 6 in 1993 – 2002;
- Mitsubishi Fuso Canter 7 in 2002 – 2004.
