EA189 or VW 1.6/2.0 TDI engines
A series of Volkswagen EA189 1.6 and 2.0 TDI diesel engines was produced from 2007 to 2015 and was installed on almost the entire model range of the German company, including Audi cars. Formally, this family also included the 1.2 TDI engine.
Diesel engines EA189 1.6 TDI
EA189 diesels debuted in 2007, first with 2.0-litres, and two years later with 1.6-litres. These engines differed from the predecessors of the EA188 series primarily in the fuel system: pump injectors gave way to Continental's Common Rail with support for Euro 5 environmental standards. The intake manifold received swirl flaps, plus the exhaust cleaning system became more complicated.
In all other respects, the changes in these engines were more evolutionary than revolutionary, because these are almost the same diesel engines with an in-line 4-cylinder block made of cast iron, an aluminum 16-valve block head, a timing belt drive and hydraulic compensators. Supercharging is handled by a BorgWarner BV39F-0136 variable geometry turbocharger.
There were many modifications of 1.6-liter engines, we will list the most common of them:
- CAYA (75 hp / 195 Nm);
- CAYB (90 hp / 230 Nm);
- CAYC (105 hp / 250 Nm);
- CAYD (105 hp / 250 Nm);
- CAYE (75 hp / 225 Nm).
Diesel engines EA189 2.0 TDI
The 2.0-liter engines did not differ much from the 1.6-liter ones, except for the displacement, of course. It used its own more efficient turbocharger, most often the BorgWarner BV43, as well as some especially powerful diesel modifications equipped with a block of balancer shafts.
Separately, it is worth talking about the updated diesel engines, sometimes they are called the second generation. They finally got rid of the constantly jamming intake manifold swirl flaps, and also replaced the capricious piezo injectors with more reliable and simple electromagnetic ones.
2-liter engines were produced in countless versions, we list only the main ones:
- CAAA (84 hp / 220 Nm);
- CAAB (102 hp / 250 Nm);
- CAAC (140 hp / 340 Nm);
- CAGA (143 hp / 320 Nm);
- CAHA (170 hp / 350 Nm);
- CBAB (140 hp / 320 Nm);
- CBBB (170 hp / 350 Nm);
- CFCA (180 hp / 400 Nm);
- CFGB (170 hp / 350 Nm);
- CFHC (140 hp / 320 Nm);
- CKTB (109 hp / 300 Nm);
- CKUB (163 hp / 400 Nm);
- CLCA (110 hp / 250 Nm);
- CLJA (140 hp / 320 Nm).
Since 2012, such diesel engines have begun to replace EA288 units with electromagnetic injectors.
The Volkswagen CKUB 2.0-liter bi-turbo diesel engine was produced from 2011 to 2013 and was installed on restyled versions of the popular first generation Crafter model. An updated version of this power unit appeared in 2013 and had its own CSNA index.
The 2.0-liter Volkswagen CFHC diesel engine was assembled by the concern from 2010 to 2020 and installed on such popular company models as the Jetta, Touran or Skoda Superb. Most of the engines in the series were produced until 2015, and this engine was installed on the Caddy until 2020.
The 2.0-liter Volkswagen CKTB diesel engine was produced by the concern from 2011 to 2015 and was installed on the very popular Crafter minibuses and small trucks. An updated version of this power unit appeared in 2015 and had its own CSLA index.
The 1.6-liter Volkswagen CAYC 1.6 TDI diesel engine was produced from 2009 to 2015 and was installed on such popular concern models as the Golf 6, Passat B7 and the fifth Polo. This power unit is very common in Europe.
The 2.0-liter Volkswagen CAAC 2.0 TDI diesel engine was produced from 2009 to 2019 and was installed on numerous minibuses created on a restyled platform from the T5. This diesel is the most common in the family and is often found on the secondary market.
The 2.0-liter Audi CAGA 2.0 TDI diesel engine was assembled by the company from 2007 to 2013 and installed on such models of the German concern as the A4 B8, A5 8T or the Q5 8R crossover.
The 2.0-liter Audi CAHA 2.0 TDI engine was produced by the German concern from 2008 to 2013 and was installed on many of its popular models, such as the A4 B8, A5 8T, A6 C6 and the Q5 8R crossover. This diesel engine is essentially a more efficient version of the famous CAGA engine.
The 2.0-liter Volkswagen CBAB 2.0 TDI diesel engine was produced from 2007 to 2015 and was installed in many of the company’s popular models, such as the Tiguan, Golf 6 and Passat B6. This diesel is very popular.
The 2.0-liter Volkswagen CFCA 2.0 TDI engine was produced by the concern from 2009 to 2019 and was installed on the most powerful versions of minibuses on the restyled T5 platform. This diesel is equipped with a twin turbocharger and develops 180 hp and 400 Nm of torque.
