EA086 or VW prechamber diesel engines

The Volkswagen EA086 prechamber diesel engine series was produced from 1978 to 2003 with working volumes of 1.5, 1.6, 1.7 and 1.9 liters, in atmospheric and turbocharged versions. It was on the basis of this line that all subsequent 4-cylinder diesel engines of the concern were created.

Diesel engines EA086 1.5-, 1.6-, 1.7-liter

In August 1978, a 1.5-liter CK diesel debuted on the first generation Passat. This power unit was based on the already massive gasoline engine of the EA827 series, and its block and piston group were naturally reinforced for an increased compression ratio.

Diesel fuel injection into the prechambers was carried out by a Bosch VE distribution pump, and the single camshaft was driven by a belt. All engines of this line were 8-valve. Hydraulic compensators in the units of this series appeared only after modernization in 1985.

Over time, the working volume increased and such diesel engines with a volume of 1.6 and 1.7 liters appeared:

  • CK (atmospheric, 50 hp / 80 Nm);
  • CR (atmospheric, 54 hp / 102 Nm);
  • CS (atmospheric, 50 hp / 103 Nm);
  • JK (atmospheric, 54 hp / 100 Nm);
  • JP (atmospheric, 54 hp / 100 Nm);
  • 1V (turbocharged, 60 hp / 110 Nm);
  • CY (turbocharged, 70 hp / 133 Nm);
  • JR (turbocharged, 70 hp / 133 Nm);
  • JX (turbocharged, 70 hp / 138 Nm);
  • MD (turbocharged, 70 hp / 133 Nm);
  • MF (turbocharged, 70 hp / 133 Nm);
  • RA (turbocharged, 80 hp / 155 Nm);
  • SB (turbocharged, 80 hp / 152 Nm);
  • KY (atmospheric, 57 hp / 103 Nm).

Diesel engines EA086 1.9-liter

In 1989, a 1.9-liter 1Y diesel engine appeared on the third generation Passat. By design, the new engine did not differ much from its predecessors, but it was with it that the particularly widespread use of heavy fuel units in passenger cars began.

The network has information about 5 options for 1.9-liter engines in atmospheric and turbo versions:

  • 1X (atmospheric, 60 hp / 127 Nm);
  • 1Y (atmospheric, 68 hp / 127 Nm);
  • AEF (atmospheric, 64 hp / 125 Nm);
  • AAZ (turbocharged, 75 hp / 140 Nm);
  • ABL (turbocharged, 68 hp / 140 Nm.

EA086 swirl chamber diesel engines were installed on the Caddy until the mid-2000s, but by the end of the 90s they were replaced by EA180 engines with direct injection on passenger cars.

Engine Volkswagen JK

The concern assembled the 1.6-liter diesel engine Volkswagen JK 1.6 D from 1980 to 1989 and installed it on models that were popular at the time: the second Passat and the similar Audi 80 B2. This atmospheric diesel had a phlegmatic character, but it had a good resource.

Engine Volkswagen JP

The 1.6-liter Volkswagen JP 1.6 D diesel engine was assembled at the factory from 1983 to 1992 and installed on such popular models as the Golf 2 and similar Jetta and Cuddy. This naturally aspirated diesel engine runs noisily and with strong vibrations, and is not bad in terms of reliability.

Engine Volkswagen JX

The 1.6-liter turbo diesel engine Volkswagen JX 1.6 TD was assembled from 1984 to 1992 and installed on various modifications of the very popular Transporter T3 minibus. This diesel was known for low power, noisy operation, frequent cracking of the cylinder head.

Engine Volkswagen SB

The 1.6-liter diesel engine Volkswagen SB 1.6 TD was produced from 1989 to 1993 and was installed on many models of the concern, but is mainly known from the Passat B3 model. This turbodiesel was the most powerful in its line and was distinguished by the presence of an intercooler.

Engine Volkswagen 1X

The 1.9-liter naturally aspirated VW 1X 1.9 D diesel engine was produced from 1990 to 1995 and installed on the basic modifications of the popular Transporter T4 minibus. This diesel engine was distinguished by great endurance, but it had a very phlegmatic character.

Engine Volkswagen 1Y

The concern assembled the 1.9-liter diesel engine Volkswagen 1Y 1.9 D from 1989 to 2003 and installed it on almost all of its most popular models of the 90s of the last century. This atmospheric diesel engine had a rather large resource.

Engine Volkswagen AAZ

The 1.9-liter diesel engine Volkswagen AAZ 1.9 TD was produced from 1991 to 1998 and was installed on many models of the concern, but is better known for the very popular Passat B3 and B4. It was these diesel engines that created a reputation for hardy and unpretentious cars for German cars.

Engine Volkswagen ABL

The 1.9-liter VW ABL 1.9 TD diesel engine was produced by the company from 1992 to 2003 and was installed in various versions of the popular Transporter minibus in the back of the T4. It is such power units as the ABL that have earned the Transporter a reputation as a workhorse.
