The N47D16 engine has an all-aluminum crankcase with thermally bonded cast iron cylinder liners, 4 valves per cylinder, two overhead camshafts, a common injection system with a pressure of 1600 to 2200 bar, solenoid injectors that inject fuel into the combustion chamber and a turbocharger with two turbochargers.
The N47D16U1 engine is available in two versions. The 95 hp modification is installed on the F20 114d and F21 114d. The 116 hp modification is installed on the F20 116d EDE and F21 116d EDE.
The N47 family also includes: N47D20.

Disadvantages of the N47D16 engine
- characteristic sounds in the rear of the engine: the reason is the wear of the gas distribution mechanism;
- problems with the intake manifold flaps, similar to the one in the M47;
- piezoelectric injectors are not recoverable, but with proper use can last more than 200,000 km.
