EA824 or Audi V8 engines
Audi EA824 8-cylinder engine line debuted in 1988 with the Audi V8 and has since grown into an impressive family of nearly a hundred different models. This series is divided into three generations: conventional injection MPI, direct FSI, turbocharged TFSI.
1st generation Audi V8 engines
In 1988, the group’s first 3.6-liter 8-cylinder engine debuted on the Audi V8 model. This is a V-shaped engine with distributed fuel injection, an aluminum cylinder block, two 16-valve cylinder heads with hydraulic lifters and a very interesting timing drive: there is one, but a very long belt and a pair of short chains between the camshafts. In 1992, a 4.2-liter unit appeared, and in 1995, a 3.7-liter engine instead of 3.6 liters.
In the first line there were 10 engines, which essentially differed only in displacement:
- PT (distributed injection, 250 hp / 340 Nm) for Audi V8 D1 (4C);
- AEW (distributed injection, 230 hp / 315 Nm) for Audi A8 D2 (4D);
- AKJ (distributed injection, 230 hp / 315 Nm) for Audi A8 D2 (4D);
- ABH (distributed injection, 280 hp / 400 Nm) for Audi V8 D1 (4C), S4 C4 (4A);

- AKH (distributed injection, 340 hp / 410 Nm) for Audi S8 D2 (4D).
In 1998, an updated version of the V-shaped 8-cylinder engine debuted on the Audi A8. There were many differences, but the main ones were the new block heads with 5 valves per cylinder and hydraulic chain tensioners, which acted as a variable valve timing system. Also in the series there were modifications with twin turbocharging for the RS6 and RS6 Plus models.
In the second line of the EA824 family, there were more than two dozen different power units:
- AKC (distributed injection, 260 hp / 350 Nm) for Audi A8 D2 (4D);

2nd generation Audi V8 FSI engines
In 2006, the 8-cylinder unit of the second generation with direct fuel injection appeared. In addition to the FSI system, there is already a timing chain drive and a phase control system on all camshafts. Also, on the basis of this engine, a similar 10-cylinder 5.2-liter engine was created.
This line includes ten different V8 and V10 powertrains with a volume of 4.2 and 5.2 liters:
- BVJ (direct injection, 350 hp / 440 Nm) for Audi A6 C6 (4F), A8 D3 (4E);
- CDRA (direct injection, 372 hp / 445 Nm) for Audi A8 D4 (4H);

3rd generation Audi V8 TFSI engines
In 2012, a new representative of the group’s 8-cylinder engine line was introduced. The main difference from its predecessor was the dual turbocharging system in the collapse of the block. Otherwise, there is an aluminum block, a pair of cylinder heads with hydraulic lifters and a timing chain drive. To save fuel, this engine has the ability to turn off a number of cylinders without load.
At this point, there are eight different motors in the line, but it still continues to grow:
- CEUC (direct injection, 420 hp / 550 Nm) for Audi S6 C7 (4G), S7 C7 (4G);
- CTGE (direct injection, 450 hp / 550 Nm) for Audi S6 C7 (4G), S7 C7 (4G);
- CRDB (direct injection, 560 hp / 700 Nm) for Audi RS6 C7 (4G), RS7 C7 (4G);
- CWUC (direct injection, 605 hp / 700 Nm) for Audi RS6 C7 (4G), RS7 C7 (4G);
