The engine has a reduced noise level and low toxicity of exhaust gases. To achieve noise standards, the engine’s crankshaft and camshaft are equipped with hydraulic dampers to minimize noise and vibration. Also, for even greater noise absorption at idle engine speeds, injection of a small amount of fuel is used before the injection of the main portion.
The Volvo D13K460 engine complies with Euro 6, which, compared to Euro 5, has reduced the permissible nitrogen oxide (NOX) content by 80% and the particulate matter emissions by 50%. To comply with legal requirements, Volvo Trucks has developed a muffler after-treatment system that includes a Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC), a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), a Selective Catalytic Reduction, SCR) with an ammonia catalytic converter (Ammonia Slip Catalyst, ASC) and an uncooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve.
