Compliance with the new environmental standard Euro 5 is just one of several reasons for the development of the DAF MX 340 engine. Of course, the developers wanted to make a very reliable and durable engine. It also offers better driving comfort with multiple torque values. The MX 340 combines proven state-of-the-art technology with smart innovation.
A special feature of the engine is the timing gear drive located at the rear of the engine, on the flywheel side. Accordingly, all gear-driven attachments are also located at the rear of the engine.
The MX 340 engine uses new pistons with improved thermal properties and requiring less cooling. This means that a smaller fuel pump is sufficient for maximum performance and lower frictional losses. At the same time, the injection angles and the engine management system have been optimized.

Advanced technologies, first-class materials and extensive integration of functions increase the reliability and durability of assemblies and parts. The water and oil supply lines, low pressure fuel lines and the injection pump housing are built into the cylinder block. The cylinder block is designed without side covers for maximum rigidity and low noise levels. The one-piece cylinder head has a bore for the intake manifold. The oil filter, oil thermostat and oil cooler have been combined into a single oil block.
Intelligent injection saves fuel and, consequently, reduces the level of CO and other toxic components. Secondly, the 12.9-liter MX 340 diesels feature SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) technology. Simply put, this is afterburning of exhaust gases. Third, the purification process is enhanced by the DeNOx catalytic converter.
New engineered features in the MX340 engine extend service intervals to 90,000 km.
Poly V-belt drive:
- Low Power Consumption Auxiliary Air Compressor
- Smart Air Control (SAC) Equipment
- combined steering pump
Retarder brake:
- Electrically controlled exhaust gas butterfly valve
MX Engine Brake:
- built-in compression brake
- VTG and BPV for brake power management
- intelligent, cooled, electronically controlled actuator
If synthetic oil is used to lubricate and cool the motor and a centrifugal filter is installed, then the interval between maintenance can be increased by more than 1.5 times.
Explanation of markings DAF MX 340
MX | 12.9 liter engine family |
340 | Engine power, kW – 340 |
The engine is equipped with a decompression engine brake integrated in the rocker arm with high braking power: from 210 kW at 1500 rpm to 310 kW at maximum engine speed. The engine brake is integrated into the general braking system of DAF trucks, which significantly improves driving safety.
