The GR series engines were first introduced in 2003 to the domestic Japanese market. Over time, they replaced the V-6s of the previous MZ and VZ series, as well as the legendary inline-6s of the G and JZ series. In the early 2010s, they were installed on models of a wide variety of classes and layouts – “C”, “D”, “E”, vans, medium and full-size SUVs, medium and heavy jeeps and pickups. Since it is difficult to attribute them to “folk” motors, they are of a certain academic interest only for their diversity.

Frequent problems

  1. Oil is leaking. The problem is due to the poor design of the lubricant pipe in the VVTi. Its rubber part quickly deteriorates and leads to leakage. You can solve the problem by replacing the standard tube with a new one (model of 2010 and later) made of solid metal.
  2. The motor makes noise when starting. This is a characteristic feature of the GR-series that does not affect the resource. It can be eliminated by replacing the coupling in the VVTi system.
  3. Reduced idle speed. The throttle-valve module should be cleaned every 50,000 km of distance traveled.
  4. Leaking pump. It needs to be changed every 70 thousand kilometers.

The obvious disadvantages of the unit also include: frequent damage to the ignition coils, the need to replace the timing chain every 200,000 km, damage to the 5th cylinder (for the FSE model). The latter is due to the poor-quality cooling of the unit, unforeseen by the designers. As a result, seizures are formed in it and oil consumption increases – the engine needs to be changed.

However, in general, the resource of the Toyota 4GR engine is good – the unit can move off a third of a million km. In this case, you should pay attention to its maintenance and fill in high-quality oil.
