Engine Toyota 2JZ-GE

Toyota’s 3.0-liter 2JZ-GE engine was assembled at the Tahara Plant in Japan from 1991 to 2007 and fitted to the company’s popular rear wheel drive models such as the Aristo, Crown and Mark II. There are two modifications of this motor: a 1991 stock model and a 1997 version with VVT-i.

The 3.0-liter modification of the JZ engine appeared a year later than the 2.5-liter, that is, in 1991, and was distinguished by a large piston stroke and a 14 millimeter higher cylinder block. In all other respects, this is a similar in-line six with a cast-iron block and a 24-valve cylinder head without hydraulic lifters, and the camshafts are also driven here by a toothed belt. As in the younger unit, the intake manifold is equipped with the ACIS variable geometry system.

The 3.0-liter engine was upgraded a year later than its counterpart, that is, in 1997, and its essence was the same: a VVT-i variable valve timing system appeared at the intake, and the outdated ignition system with a distributor gave way to a more modern type DIS-3.

The JZ family also includes engines: 1JZ‑GE, 1JZ‑GTE, 1JZ‑FSE, 2JZ‑GE, 2JZ‑GTE, 2JZ‑FSE.

The engine was installed on:

Disadvantages of the 2JZ-GE engine

  • The design of the motor has no weaknesses, but at high mileage it consumes oil. The reason here, as usual, is the wear of valve stem seals or the occurrence of rings.
  • The 1997 update brought the engine not only a more reliable ignition system, but also a capricious VVT-i phase regulator, which often serves no more than 100 – 150 thousand km.
  • Power units of the JZ line have an impressive number of electronic sensors that periodically fail.
  • There are not so many minor problems here: except for the low resource of the pump, not the most reliable belt tensioner and the ignition system, which is very afraid of water. This motor also likes to fill in candles, and the valves periodically need adjustment.
