The 1AR engine began to be produced in 2008 for the North American market and for a long time they did not try to export it to other countries. First of all, the Toyota 1AR engine replaced the 2AZ-FE, and secondly, it filled the gap in the engine line for the original front-wheel drive models between 160-horsepower 2.4 and 280-horsepower 3.5. The engine was first installed on the Toyota Venza, then it was installed on other Toyota and Lexus models.

— official information
The Toyota 1AR engine is quite reliable and durable. Its service life with high-quality and regular maintenance can exceed 300 thousand km. However, no matter how perfect it is, it also has some disadvantages:
- Extraneous sound from the clutch on VVTi. The problem is solved by replacing the part.
- Leaking pump. Periodic replacement of this element is required.
- Disposable motor. If the cylinder block is skewed, the engine will have to be changed completely.
The use of high-quality oil, good gasoline and timely maintenance helps to extend the life of the engine.
