Engine Honda D17A

D17A engine

The 1.7-liter Honda D17A gasoline engine was produced by the company from 2000 to 2007 and was installed on such popular models of the Japanese concern as the Civic, FR-V or the Stream minivan. D17A power units are divided into two groups, some were equipped with a VTEC system, while others were not.

The D-series also includes internal combustion engines: D13B, D14A, D15B and D16A.

The engine was installed on:

  • Acura EL 2 (ES) in 2001 – 2005;
  • Honda Civic 7 (ES) in 2000 – 2005;
  • Honda FR-V 1 (BE) in 2004 – 2007;
  • Honda Stream 1 (RN) in 2000 – 2006.

Disadvantages of the Honda D17A engine

  • This engine is reliable, but may start to consume oil by 150,000 km.
  • Another unpleasant feature of the unit is poor start-up in cold weather.
  • Throttle body contamination regularly leads to floating rpm.
  • The timing belt serves about 100 thousand km, and when it breaks, the valve often bends.
  • Thermal valve clearances are adjusted every 40,000 km, there are no hydraulic compensators.

In 2000, the D17A engine appeared, and it became the largest in the D series. Despite the increased displacement, this engine is 8% lighter than the D16. The D17 cylinder block is reinforced, but the height is the same as the D16 – 212 mm. Inside the block is a crankshaft with a piston stroke of 94.4 mm, pistons of a new design, their compression height is 30 mm, and the length of the connecting rods is 137 mm. Thanks to all this, the working volume increased to 1.7 liters.

On top of the cylinder block is a single-shaft SOHC cylinder head with 16 valves, with modified intake ports and modified combustion chambers.

The intake manifold was also replaced with a new plastic one, which is focused on medium speeds. The D17A uses a new exhaust manifold and a new catalyst has been used to improve environmental performance.

Timing belt drive, the belt itself is narrower than on the D16A. Replacing the timing belt D17A is required after 100,000 km. When it breaks, the motor bends the valve, but there are times when everything ends normally.

Valve adjustment on the D17A is required every 40 thousand km. Valve clearances for cold: inlet 0.18 – 0.22 mm, outlet 0.23 – 0.27 mm.
